How to use water efficiently at home?

An average Indian uses around 138 litres of water every day. There are several ways we can choose to use water efficiently at home. They are listed below. Go through each of them and check if you can implement them on daily basis.

  1. Turn off the Tap while brushing your teeth or shaving. This can save more than 6 litres of water per minute. Turn it on whenever necessary.
  2. Take shorter showers. A normal shower can use around 6 – 45 litres per minutes. A bath tub and a mug can be a perfect replacement for it. It can help you know the amount of water you use to have a bath.
  3. Fix a dripping tap. It may seem so little, but every drop counts. A simple dripping tap can waste almost 10 – 15 litres water every day.
  4. Water your garden with a garden can instead of using a hosepipe. A hosepipe can waste more than 1000 litres of water per hour. Water the plants when needed. Watering the plants in the early morning and late in the afternoon can reduce the rate of evaporation.
  5. Install a water meter. This can help you keep a data of how much electricity is used to pump a particular amount of water. Thus we can measure and keep an eye on how much water is used on daily basis.
  6. Check for leaks in toilets and pipes in the house. They might be drops. But overall you will be wasting 100 litres o f water daily. Maintain the pipe connections regularly, check for leak and you are good to go.
  7. Investing in water efficient goods might be a good choice. Water efficient showers, taps, toilets, and other electronic items can save thousand litres of water for you.
  8. Rain water harvesting can be an excellent option. The water so collected can be used for gardening, in toilets and other purposes outside the house. It can be done by installing plastic water storage tanks outside house. The tanks will connected with pipes from different areas, which can regulate the flow of rain water inside it.
